The elections have come and we wait for the tallies to be completed. We have all been inundated with text messages about who to vote for, donating, and more. Some of us, if not all of us, are tired. Hopefully you have done your civic duty and are now waiting to get into the swing of life. The nerves, fears, and anxiety is real. Here is your guide for post election self care.

Consider the sources-Post Election Wrap Ups

Rely if you choose to engage in the post election banter. From which websites are more valuable for reliable information over the latest social sites we like to go to for celebrity news and more. Who you allow in your space will have an impact over your mental health. For self care to take its highest priorities, limit who you interact with. Sources like CNN, NPR, MSNBC, ABC news and more are sources to consider. If you are constantly getting information from opinion based news sources the chances that you could be getting wrong information increases. Also some of the best ways to increase your self care is to limit as much news in your homes and phones. This means substituting it with something that makes you happy.

Helping your Nerves and Fears Post Election

It is okay to be nervous and even fearful. The thoughts that you have about your personal future are real. Consider channeling that fear in the peace that you have done your part. In addition to doing your part, know that the community that you are in stands with you. You have seen the many gatherings that have taken place. Although we don't have to agree on everything, the overall premise in making the community that so many of us are in safer, healthier and more still aligns. Engaging with the same community and finding safe spaces to speak up is self care too.

Add in Movement

Not all of us are privileged to have a gym membership but you can take more walks around your neighborhood and community. Adding movement and getting back into nature is a great way to increase self care. One of the things that we don't realize that takes a back seat in our self care is the US. When was the last time you did something that filled your cup? Consider getting a family member or friend involved. Another tip since we love watching television a lot is to do simple steps while you watch your show. Yes, you can combine a sedentary activity that you like with movement. You may get so caught in your steps that you don't recognize the time has passed.

Proper Care is Self Care

We tend to make self care difficult. It's more than bubble baths and spa days. It's the ability to recognize that you need something at any given moment. Been feeling tired? Be clear in setting a boundary with your bedtime. Sleep is a form of self care. Been eating out more and know you need to take a step back and eat more balanced meals at home? Take your favorite meal from your favorite restaurant and learn to make it at home. Need more time to focus but feel focus is far and few inbetween? No problem, go to your local Dollar store in their book section, get a crossword, a book, notebook, and more and dedicate to doing one activity in it per week. Letter writing, journaling, and even using creativity is a form of self care.

Setting Boundaries

Engage in conversations in your community. Consider being a voice in your community in everyday topics. However as you engage, get inspired, and need to sometimes retreat, know that you the whole person is important. Fill your cup daily. We at The Philly Download want you to be at our best.
